Education Data

Gaelic Education data for early years and schools, both Gaelic Medium Education (GME) and Gaelic Learner Education (GLE), has been gathered since the school year 2001-02. This was initially done by the University of Strathclyde until the work of collection, processing and presentation was passed on to Bòrd na Gàidhlig in 2009-10. These detailed figures were and are confidential due to data protection considerations,* but from 2011-12 an additional annual report, with public data at council and national levels, has been available from the Bòrd.**

Since 2019-20 the public report has been published under the Official Statistics (Scotland) Order 2008.

Since 2021-22 the raw data has been collected by the Scottish Government through its annual census of education delivery, with advice from Bòrd na Gàidhlig. Details on the overall data is available at www.gov.scot/collections/early-learning-and-childcare-statistics/ and www.gov.scot/collections/school-education-statistics/.

The Education Data for 2023–24 and 2024–25 is currently unavailable on the website, as it is not screen reader–accessible. We are actively working to resolve this issue. If you require access to this data in the meantime, please contact us at oifis@gaidhlig.scot.
